When it comes to bicycles and bicycle brands, it doesn’t get much more Canadian than Opus. It began in the heart of Montreal, a city with its fair share of weather and hilly terrain. What better place to carve out a progressive bicycle brand dedicated to quality and durability?
Founded in 2000 by a group of cycling enthusiasts from OGC (Outdoor Gear Canada), Opus combines passion and expertise to create bicycles that excel in challenging conditions and diverse riding environments.
It began as a road bike brand and has since expanded its offerings to include everything from urban bikes, gravel to electric and kid’s bikes, carving out its niche by staying true to its core values: innovation, durability, and a deep understanding of the cycling experience.
The story of Opus began with a simple yet ambitious vision: to design bikes capable of handling life in Canada and meeting the needs of cyclists across the country. Montreal, where the bikes are still assembled, served as the perfect testing ground for this vision.
“Montreal turned out to be the ideal testing ground for Opus,” says an Opus spokesperson. “Hills, snow, ice, rain—if Opus bikes excelled here, they’d be great anywhere!”
This commitment to designing bikes that could withstand all conditions became the foundation for Opus’s approach, ensuring that their bikes are not only functional but also durable and enjoyable to ride.
Opus has distinguished itself in the crowded bike market by focusing on key aspects such as lightweight design, competitive pricing, and serviceability.
“We strive to design light bikes at a competitive price with a focus on serviceability,” he says.
One of the standout features of Opus bikes is the company’s commitment to incremental improvements. Rather than overhauling designs every year, Opus focuses on refining and enhancing their existing bikes.
“Some of the incremental improvements that were added over the years include the integrated racks for the LRT models, the front and rear lights we import from Finland, the more powerful Shimano EP6, and the ever-durable Cues drivetrain,” Opus says. This approach ensures that each update builds on previous successes, enhancing durability and performance without sacrificing reliability.
The most popular analog bike is the Opus Orpheo.
At the heart of Opus’s design philosophy is a focus on the rider’s experience.
“All our bikes are designed with the rider in mind,” says the Opus spokesperson. “Whether this means that our end goal is to set a bike for a specific price range or a specific usage.”
This rider-focused mindset means that every Opus bike, from entry-level to top-of-the-line models, is crafted with meticulous attention to detail. This includes choosing colors and graphics that are timeless yet trendy, ensuring that every bike not only performs well but also looks great.
Operating in a market dominated by larger, more established brands has posed challenges for Opus. Yet, the company has consistently demonstrated creativity and agility in overcoming these hurdles.
“Our biggest challenge over the last years was staying true to what made Opus a success while staying relevant to our dealers,” Opus General Manager says. To navigate this competitive landscape, Opus has embraced a flexible approach, ensuring their bikes remain competitive and appealing to both dealers and customers.
Sustainability is another core value that drives Opus. The company operates from a LEED-certified, eco-responsible facility recognized for its energy efficiency and reduction of greenhouse gases.
“Another important component of sustainability is building a product that will stay in service for years,” the Opus spokesperson explains. “A fundamental consideration in the design of all Opus bikes is how easy they will be to service in the future.” This commitment to sustainability extends to the materials used in their bikes and packaging, with Opus avoiding proprietary parts, using recyclable materials, and minimizing plastic to reduce their environmental impact.
As Opus looks to the future, the company remains focused on innovation and enhancing their e-bike offerings.
Recent updates include the addition of the Cues and Shimano EP600 e-bike systems and newly designed rear racks for their top models. The Opus E-Bike Product Manager envisions a future where urban mobility is transformed by technology and design.
“We hope to be part of this future by continuing to improve on our LRT line and adding more capacity and flexibility to our e-bikes so they can meet the needs of their buyers all along their journey,” the Opus spokesperson says. This forward-thinking approach positions Opus as a key player in the evolving landscape of urban transportation.
Opus has garnered positive feedback from riders who have experienced the joy of cycling with their e-bikes.
“We get testimonials from our customers but also from friends and family members who rediscover the joys of cycling and tell us they have been riding longer and further since their purchase of an Opus e-bike,” he adds. These testimonials are a testament to the impact of Opus’s commitment to quality and rider satisfaction.
Looking ahead, the brand remains committed to maintaining their reputation for durable, high-quality bikes while expanding their range.
The team highlights the company’s long-term goals: “While we look to expand our range in the categories we thrive in—E-bikes, City and Sports, Road and Gravel, Kids—our priority is always to improve with each new release, meeting our customers where they are, and we plan to keep doing so.”
This commitment to continuous improvement and customer-centric design ensures that Opus will remain a leading name in the cycling world for years to come.
Opus’s journey from a local Canadian startup to a prominent bicycle brand is a testament to their dedication to cycling, innovation, and sustainability. They don’t consider themselves a premium brand. They want to be known as a company that builds good quality and solid bicycles that will last a long time. That’s the focus.
New on the horizon is a relaunch of the road category with 3 new models as well as adding an e-gravel bike to the electric category.
As they continue to evolve and expand, Opus remains committed to providing exceptional bikes that inspire and empower riders around the world.
