After a decade of anticipation, the Raccoon River Valley Trail and the High Trestle Trail are finally connected and there is a celebration this weekend to kick off the fun. This project opens up a whole new world for cyclists, hikers, and nature lovers.
The Raccoon River Valley Trail (RRVT) spans 89 miles, meandering through west-central Iowa’s picturesque landscapes. As you pedal or stroll along the RRVT, you’re treated to the charm of small towns like Jefferson, Perry, and Adel. Each town has its own unique flair, and the trail is dotted with art installations and historical landmarks. Whether you’re looking for a day of adventure or a peaceful escape, the RRVT offers something for everyone.
Then there’s the High Trestle Trail, famous for its stunning High Trestle Bridge. Rising 13 storeys above the Des Moines River Valley, this half-mile-long bridge is a sight to behold, especially when it lights up at night. The trail stretches 25 miles, offering a smooth, flat path that’s perfect for cyclists and walkers of all levels. The towns of Slater and Madrid along the way are great spots to take a break and enjoy the local hospitality.
Now that these two trails are linked, the possibilities for exploration and adventure have grown exponentially.
To celebrate this incredible milestone, a special event is happening on August 17 including a gathering at the trailhead in Perry, right by the iconic Big Bike. The route takes participants from Perry to Bouton and then to Woodward to soak in the beautiful scenery before heading back to Bouton. That’s where the ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place at 1 p.m., officially opening the new extension.
Luke Hoffman, the Executive Director of the Iowa Bicycle Coalition, will be leading the ride. Participation is free. Along the way, you’ll find food and drinks at local businesses in Perry, Bouton, and Woodward, perfect for recharging and taking in the local flavor. And remember, safety first – helmets are strongly recommended.
This is more than just a trail connection; it’s a celebration of community and the great outdoors. Whether you’re an avid cyclist or just looking for a fun day out, this is your chance to be part of something special. So, grab your bike, bring your friends and family, and join us for a day of fun and adventure on the trails. Let’s ride together and make some unforgettable memories!
