There is a bike boom, bike shops are being overrun and for good reason. People are slowly discovering what so many already knew — that bicycles are the perfect machine: keeping our fitness levels up, reducing our stress, saving money, cleaning the air, solving the climate crisis, and, let’s face it, they are so much fun.
That’s why one in 10 American adults reported having ridden a bike for the first time in a year.
But, while the boom is ongoing, so are supply shortages resulting from the pandemic and that means new bikes are not easy to find and certainly high prices are going nowhere fast. So buying a new bicycle isn’t always as easy as it seems. And that’s where Cycling Avenue comes in. This online bike shop is making a name for itself by offering up completely refurbished bicycles to the general public, in addition to purchasing old bicycles for resale.
Buying used bicycles is nothing new. But anyone who has attempted to purchase through sites such as Kijiji or Facebook Marketplace is familiar with the challenges to those platforms: the lack of any warranty, the quality risk, the tire kickers, the unsavory characters, the low-ballers. Worst of all are those people who purchase used bikes for as low a price as possible then flip them again for a premium.
It’s a brutal landscape out there for would-be bike buyers. But Cycling Avenue takes away those concerns and makes purchasing a refurbished bicycle a breeze.
“We realized that on average a bike is only used for 15% of its maximum lifespan before being replaced, or people just stopped using it,” says Samuel Grimard, Brand Manager of the Montreal-based company. “So there’s still a lot of life left to each bike to give kilometres of happiness to another cyclist. That’s where we come in.”
One of the key tips for buying a used bicycle is to know what you want and to certify the condition of the bicycle.
Cycling Avenue will purchase used bicycles from the general public, following a very easy and streamlined trade-in process, and when they take possession they put every single bike through a thorough check-up from stem to stern.
“Each bike that goes into our warehouse goes through the same refurbishing process. We can change brake pads, cables, drivetrain, and more,” he says. “Our refurbishing process can add up to $500 worth of parts and that’s where our added-value comes in.”
There is financing available, and even a 30-day trial period for every bicycle.
The benefits of buying a used bike are many. But, first and foremost, it is cost-saving, which can be substantial for a bicycle that still has the majority of its useful life remaining.
“Most of the bikes, like I said, are only being used 15 per cent of their maximum lifespan,” Grimard explains. “So if you buy a bike that’s three to five years old, it’s still in very good condition. That’s really the best benefit of buying a used bike is being able to access a higher performance bike for a lower price.”
Cycling Avenue has hundreds of bicycles available for sale in all categories from road and mountain bikes to city bikes, hybrids, and e-bikes.
Right now, a Trek Verve hybrid bicycle is on sale for $759, ideal for commuters and leisure cyclists. An Oyama CX-8 folding bike is in stock and priced at $949.
Other benefits of buying a used bicycle include the environment. Bicycles are already fantastic for the planet, but giving new life to a used bicycle instead of buying a newly manufactured model hits the super sustainable level.
In addition, with Cycling Avenue, customers have access to every bicycle in stock no matter their location as the company will ship throughout Canada and the United States. There is also an in-house bike expert to offer personalized consulting on everything from advice on buying and trading to positioning via video calls.
