In an era when angle grinders have become the go-to tools for bike thieves, Kryptonite has responded with its most advanced bicycle lock yet: the New York Lock Diamond Standard. Long known for tough, no-nonsense security solutions, Kryptonite has raised the bar with a lock purpose-built to withstand the very worst the streets can throw at your bike.
At the heart of the Diamond Standard lock is a 26mm double-layered steel shackle, reinforced with a diamond coating designed specifically to resist high-powered angle grinders. According to Kryptonite, it would take at least 10 grinder discs to break through. Independent testers have pushed that number even higher — one reported using 26 discs and over six minutes of cutting to make just two slices.
That’s an extraordinary level of protection. In a time when viral videos regularly show locks being defeated in seconds, the New York Lock Diamond Standard stands out as a serious deterrent.
If a thief wants a bicycle, eventually they are going to get it. But, putting up the best defence possible is usually enough to make the cowardly evildoer move on to an easier mark.

The lock’s security credentials don’t stop at brute strength. It also includes:
A patent-pending double deadbolt that holds up even under extreme twisting forces
A pick and drill-resistant cylinder
A protective dust cover that helps keep grit out of the keyhole
Three stainless steel keys included in the package
There’s also a flex frame bracket included, allowing riders to mount the hefty lock on their frame. We found the installation to be very straightforward: wrap the included rubber shim around the down tube, secure it with the nylon strap, then attach the bracket using the provided hex wrench. Once installed, the lock slides and snaps easily in and out of place.

As expected with this level of defense, the lock is heavy. Cyclists should be prepared to feel the weight if it’s attached to the bike during the ride — it’s not exactly featherlight. That said, the security benefits outweigh the bulk for riders parking in theft-prone areas or leaving bikes unattended for extended periods.
Despite the robust design, the lock offers ample internal space, making it practical for a variety of frame and wheel locking configurations.
The New York Lock Diamond Standard carries Kryptonite’s highest security rating and has earned multiple third-party certifications. On top of that, Kryptonite offers a five-year anti-theft protection program covering bikes up to $5,000—though riders must register to qualify.

This lock doesn’t come cheap. Retail prices are well above entry-level models, and in some cases can exceed $200 CAD. But for serious urban cyclists — particularly those in high-risk areas — the investment may very well be worth it. When you factor in potential theft losses and the peace of mind this lock brings, the price begins to look like a reasonable trade-off.
The Kryptonite New York Lock – Diamond Standard is a fortress on wheels. It’s not for everyone — weight, cost, and bulk may be a deterrent to some casual riders — but for those who prioritize security above all else, it’s hard to beat. In the ongoing arms race between bike thieves and security tech, Kryptonite has delivered a strong new contender.
