BIXI, Montreal’s popular bike-sharing service, has reached new heights in 2024, with ridership numbers soaring past 13 million trips, marking a 15% increase over last year. This surge follows a string of record-breaking months, with July and September each surpassing 2 million trips.
What’s fueling this success? BIXI’s expansion beyond Montreal into nearby cities such as Laval, Longueuil, and Sainte-Julie is proving to be a winning formula. The service now operates in a growing number of communities across Quebec, offering a sustainable and flexible transportation option that more and more residents are embracing.
BIXI’s presence is spreading throughout the region. This year, the service added new stations in Sainte-Julie and is set to install 22 more in Longueuil, bringing the South Shore’s network to 64 stations by 2025. Laval will see its number of stations triple by next spring, and BIXI is in talks with other cities across Quebec to further expand its reach. The goal? To make bike-sharing a convenient option not only in Montreal but throughout the province.
“Sherbrooke has already joined the BIXI movement, and we’re excited to see more cities following suit,” says Christian Vermette, General Manager of BIXI Montréal. “This growth not only transforms mobility in Quebec but positions BIXI as a leader in the global bike-sharing industry.”
BIXI’s success isn’t just about numbers—it’s also about the satisfaction of its users. In a 2024 survey, 91.1% of members and occasional users reported being happy with the service. Riders highlighted the convenience of station locations, ease of use, and affordable pricing as key reasons for their loyalty.
The city of Montreal is also making investments to enhance the biking experience, adding more bike lanes and improving safety. “This success shows how strategic investments, like the introduction of electric bikes and expanding services year-round, are changing how Montrealers get around,” says Marianne Giguère, a city councillor focused on mobility and bicycle planning.
Another big milestone this year is the continued success of BIXI Year-Round, the winter bike-sharing program that launched as a pilot in 2023. After last year’s pilot, which saw nearly 1 million trips made by 93,000 users, BIXI Year-Round is back for its second season.
This time, 200 stations are open across Montreal, Laval, and several other boroughs, with 2,000 specially adapted bikes available to brave the cold. In fact, 65% of last winter’s users were trying out winter cycling for the first time, and 81% of them plan to ride again.
BIXI continues to innovate with the opening of its first “Carrefour BIXI” in Parc La Fontaine, designed to streamline bike maintenance and offer riders direct access to BIXI staff. The location serves as a hub for repairs, helping bikes get back on the road faster. With nearly 100 repairs carried out each day, this new facility has made a noticeable difference in keeping the bikes in service.
Plans are in place to open more such hubs across Montreal in 2025.
As BIXI expands and evolves, it remains committed to making cycling more accessible and sustainable. With its expanding network, high user satisfaction, and growing popularity in both urban and suburban areas, BIXI is cementing its role as a key player in Quebec’s active transportation landscape.
