It’s been a year, hasn’t it? Around this time, it’s a great opportunity to look forward and see how to fit smart living by bicycle into our lives. For some, it’s about community and taking part in social rides or advocacy. For others, it might be about learning to fix a flat tire and other basic bicycle maintenance. No matter what kind of cyclist, there are new goals to set. And, well, now is the time. To that end, we have cobbled together a list of bicycle-centered resolutions.

Embark on aimless, social bike rides

Cycling, for many, is primarily a mode of transportation, an individual endeavor. This year, however, break that pattern. Instead of opting for a pint or coffee, extend an invitation to friends for spontaneous bike rides—no destination in mind. The goal is to share the joy of cycling with the people they hold dear through social rides. Or join a social ride in your community and meet some likeminded people.

Master the art of bike maintenance

This year, let’s be determined to learn the ins and outs of bike maintenance, equipped with the knowledge to fix flat tires and broken derailleurs. It’s always cheaper to go the DIY route, not to mention giving you a closer connection with your two-wheeled friend.

Embark on a bike tour

Adventure doesn’t always require a passport. This year, maybe consider taking on a bike tour, even if it’s just a short one. Instead of just reading about global bike journeys, seek a local adventure—a long weekend here, a day off there, exploring nearby towns. Adventure is closer than you think and who knows? Maybe you’ll be tackling a Eurovelo route in no time.

Make biking the first choice, always

The ultimate resolution: try to prioritize cycling in every aspect of travels around the city. While we might already ride daily, there is always room for improvement. Don’t default to a car for trips to the movies; instead, explore opportunities to choose the bike first.

Embrace night riding adventures

Try something new with your cycling by heading out into the night. Night rides offer a unique perspective, with city lights or moonlit trails creating a different ambiance.

Become a bike advocate

Recognizing the positive impact of cycling on individuals and communities, aim to get involved in local bike advocacy. Whether it’s participating in protest and community building rides, supporting bike-friendly policies, or volunteering time to promote cycling awareness, try to contribute to making their community more bicycle-friendly. Here are seven organisations to help you find your voice.

Organize a bikepacking trip

Inspired by the allure of adventure and the love for the outdoors, this year organize your first bikepacking trip. This immersive experience will involve planning a route, packing essentials onto their bike, and exploring the beauty of nature. It’s a chance to combine a passion for cycling with the tranquility of camping under the stars.

Share cycling adventures

In the age of social media and digital storytelling, consider documenting cycling adventures more comprehensively. Whether through photos, videos, or a blog, share the beauty of rides, the challenges overcome, and the joy found on two wheels, especially in an urban context. This not only serves as a personal record but also inspires others to embrace a cycling lifestyle.

Practice mindful cycling

Beyond the physical benefits, cycling offers a mental escape. This year, let’s focus on the mindfulness aspect of riding. Whether it’s practicing deep breathing while cruising along scenic routes or incorporating mindful meditation stops during longer rides, aim to use cycling as a holistic tool for well-being.

Bike travel

Consider planning a bicycle travel adventure. One of the best ways to take a vacation is by putting the bicycle front and center, whether it’s getting to know a new city or travelling long-distance trails in the countryside. This is the year!

Learn to ride in all seasons

Commit to embracing the challenges and joys of year-round cycling. Invest in appropriate gear for cold, wet, or snowy conditions, and get comfortable navigating weather changes. This resolution transforms cycling from a seasonal activity to a consistent lifestyle, opening up opportunities for adventure and fitness no matter the forecast.

Support local bike shops

This year, make a conscious effort to support local bike shops instead of always defaulting to big online retailers. Whether it’s for maintenance, accessories, or even just advice, these shops play a crucial role in building strong cycling communities. Developing a relationship with local bike professionals can make the cycling experience even more rewarding.
