Ok, Rihanna, Cardi B and Anne Hathaway may have stolen the headlines at this year’s Met Gala, but for us, the one-and-only David Byrne burned down the house when he showed up to the red carpet on his bicycle, as he should.

In our world, David Byrne could be the most beloved cyclist on the planet. The legendary musician, both with the Talking Heads and his own incredible solo work, is a city bicyclist through-and-through. He wrote a book about travelling the world with his folding bicycle, he designed bike racks in New York City, and has been a constant force for urban cycling good.

Byrne showed up at the high-brow fashion event in what has been described by the folks at Bicycling as a quite lovely “titanium twin top tube Budnitz single speed with a Gates belt drive.”

It even has his name and floor number on the wooden front fender. So great.

“I don’t think people are doing it to be more green, or because it’s good for exercise, or something like that,” Byrne said of cycling, in a past interview with Momentum. “I think those are side-effects. People are doing it because it actually feels good, because it sometimes saves money, and sometimes is the fastest way to get from A to B if you’re not going too far. You have a feeling of self-empowerment, that you’re in charge of when you go, how you go and when you get there.”

Byrne’s been cruising the streets of New York on two wheels since the early 1980s, when he collected his trusty adolescent ride – an English three-speed – from his parents’ suburban home and brought it to the city.
