Tern has long been a pioneering force in the cargo bike world, redefining what’s possible with two wheels. From its groundbreaking vertical storage solution to its modular design and vast ecosystem of accessories, Tern has consistently pushed the boundaries of urban mobility. Now, with the third-generation GSD, the brand raises the bar yet again, delivering a cargo bike that’s more powerful, and more adaptable.
The original GSD broke new ground by proving that a compact cargo bike could carry heavy loads without sacrificing agility. This new model takes it further, boasting a maximum gross vehicle weight of 210 kg (463 lb)—enough to comfortably transport two children, an adult passenger, or substantial cargo. Despite its impressive capacity, the GSD remains as nimble and manageable as a standard city bike.
A longer wheelbase and lower center of gravity further enhance stability, while an upgraded frame with larger-diameter hydroformed tubing increases stiffness and durability. Whether hauling kids, groceries, or gear, riders will appreciate the confidence-inspiring handling.
Tern’s latest GSD embraces the best technology with Bosch’s Cargo Line motor, providing powerful pedal assistance. Riders can choose between Bosch’s eBike System 2 or the Smart System, both of which deliver a smooth, intuitive ride. The Smart System models also introduce a suite of advanced security and safety features:
Additionally, the GSD sets a new safety benchmark with Bosch ABS braking, included as standard on all Smart System models. In wet or high-traffic conditions, ABS prevents front-wheel lockups, offering riders more control and stability—an important innovation for urban cyclists and seems of great value when hauling heavy loads especially.
Tern GSD
One of Tern’s most defining contributions to the cargo bike world is its modular accessory ecosystem, which allows riders to customize their GSD for any purpose. Some of the latest additions include:
With this extensive range of accessories, the GSD adapts seamlessly to the needs of families, businesses, and adventure seekers alike.
Tern revolutionized cargo bike storage with its Vertical Rolling feature, a game-changer for urban dwellers with limited space. Unlike most bulky cargo bikes that require outdoor parking, the GSD can be rolled upright into elevators or stored indoors, reducing theft risk and exposure to the elements. The FlatFold mode further shrinks its footprint, allowing it to fit behind a couch or in a small apartment—proof that big capability doesn’t have to mean big storage headaches.
Vertical store is a hallmark of the Tern GSD
Durability has always been at the heart of Tern’s designs. The new GSD meets DIN 79010, the German safety standard for cargo bikes, ensuring its frame, fork, rear rack, kickstand, and braking system are rigorously tested for heavy loads and real-world conditions. Additionally, Tern’s 7-Year Support program guarantees the availability of key replacement parts, ensuring riders can keep their bikes on the road for years to come.
The third-generation GSD is set to arrive in European and North American bike shops this May, with global availability following later in the year. Pricing starts at $4,999 / €5,399 / £4,700, varying by market and model configuration.
From redefining compact cargo bike design to pioneering vertical storage and creating a best-in-class accessory ecosystem, Tern has consistently led the way in urban cycling innovation. The latest GSD is more than just a cargo bike—it’s a testament to how far the brand has come, and how much further it’s pushing the possibilities of two-wheeled transportation.
