If your wanderlust involves two wheels and a never-ending road, then the past five years have been nothing short of a golden age for cyclists. New, scenic routes are opening up around the globe, inviting you to gear up and pedal away. These fresh paths offer breathtaking views, cultural immersion, and the thrill of exploration.

The Trans Dinarica Trail

The Trans Dinarica Cycle Route, now officially open for the two-wheel set, has recently emerged as a major highlight for cyclists worldwide, connecting all eight countries of the Western Balkans. Developed by the Slovenia-based firm GoodTrail over two years, this expansive trail covers approximately 5,480 kilometers over 95 stages, weaving through Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Albania, North Macedonia, Kosovo, and Serbia. As the first and only cycle route of its kind in the region, the Trans Dinarica offers an epic adventure across a landscape rich in natural beauty and cultural diversity.

Cyclists can now access detailed navigational packs through the newly launched Ride with GPS application, available for each country along the route. This digital experience provides cyclists with turn-by-turn trail navigation, detailed country information, weather updates, and suggestions for itineraries, points of interest, restaurants, tourism operators, services, and accommodations.

The trail averages about 50 kilometers per stage, primarily following quiet asphalt roads (about 80% of the route), forest trails, and dedicated bike paths. Supported by RECONOMY, USAID’s Economic Development, Governance and Enterprise Growth (EDGE) Project, and GIZ’s Sustainable Rural Development in Albania, the Trans Dinarica is designed to be accessible to cyclists of all abilities, providing a sustainable economic boost to local communities and celebrating the diverse traditions of the Balkans.

Whether you’re captivated by the rugged beauty of Montenegro’s fjords, the ancient cedar groves of Albania, or the quaint villages of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Trans Dinarica Trail promises an unforgettable journey through one of Europe’s most enchanting regions.
