The Green Lane Project

A tour de force initiative has launched to deliver world-class cycling infrastructure to US cities.

Brought to you by the Bikes Belong Foundation, the Green Lane Project is a new campaign that works directly with six American cities to jumpstart cycling path improvements within the next two years.

Six focus cities: Austin, TX; Chicago, IL; Memphis, TN; Portland, OR; San Francisco, CA and Washington, DC were selected for demonstrating leadership in support of a vibrant cycling community. The idea is to keep track of infrastructure improvements in these cities so more can be known and shared regarding their impact on the community and that obstacles around implementation can be addressed. Green Lane Project provides strategic and technical assistance to help these cities succeed. Progress and lessons are shared online and at events and other cities are encouraged to upload their own green lane maps to expand the knowledge base.

Project director, Martha Roskowski, reported on the interest surrounding green lanes in the US: “There’s an emerging vision around creating low-cost, low-stress connected networks on our city streets, with slow-speed side streets connecting to protected lanes on busy streets and linking with rail-trails and other separated pathway systems.” Roskowski recently hosted a best practices trip in the Netherlands that included top officials from US cities and shared, “Cities are figuring out how to translate European designs into the US context.”
