Indianapolis is making cycling history as the first U.S. city to provide free annual bike share passes to all its residents. Starting today, Marion County residents can register for a free annual IndyRides Free pass for Pacers Bike Share, coinciding with the launch of 325 new e-bikes available for public use.

The sleek white e-bikes, distinguishable from the gold classic bikes, are now stationed at 50 bikeshare hubs across the city, ready to be accessed via the BCycle mobile app.

“We piloted a free pass program last summer and aspired to expand it to all Marion County residents,” said Kären Haley, executive director of the Indianapolis Cultural Trail, which manages Pacers Bike Share. “With the backing of the Herbert Simon Family Foundation and Pacers Sports & Entertainment, we’re thrilled to see this vision come to life.”

Residents can also register online at www.pacersbikeshare.org. After registering with a valid Marion County address, an access code will be mailed to them.

“While some cities offer reduced-cost or free passes to specific groups, Indy is pioneering by making this accessible to all county residents,” Haley added.

The new e-bikes and the free annual passes are funded by a $1.2 million federal Construction Mitigation and Air Quality (CMAQ) grant, local funds from the City of Indianapolis, and support from the Herbert Simon Family Foundation and Pacers Sports & Entertainment.

“Our family is proud to support Pacers Bikeshare,” said Rachel M. Simon, president of the Herbert Simon Family Foundation. “The program offers sustainable, affordable transportation that enhances our community.”

Mayor Joe Hogsett echoed this sentiment, “IndyRides Free propels us toward a cleaner, healthier, and more mobile city.”

Rick Fuson, CEO of Pacers Sports & Entertainment, highlighted the broader benefits, “Public-private partnerships like this enrich the community and promote health and well-being.”

Dr. Virginia A. Caine, director & chief medical officer of the Marion County Public Health Department, emphasized the health benefits, “Encouraging physical activity through free bikeshare passes is a fantastic initiative.”

Pacers Bikeshare e-bikes feature electric assist, providing a boost up to 15 mph when pedaled, though they can also be used as traditional bikes. They are accessible via the Indianapolis Cultural Trail and any legal biking area. Users can check out bikes at any of the 50 stations through the BCycle app.

With this groundbreaking initiative, Indianapolis is setting a new standard for urban cycling accessibility and sustainability. And, with a more active population engaging in active transportation, Indianapolis will benefit from the increased physical and mental health of its residents, decreased congestion and cleaner air. Not a bad deal.
