The Bobbin Birdie is a step-through steel framed bike that features a 3-speed Sturmey-Archer internal gear hub, matching front and rear fenders with mudguards, a springed seat, rear rack with “rattrap,” a partial chainguard, kickstand and a comfortable upright riding position on a pair of 26” wheels.

The Birdie is one of the prettiest, yet still completely functional, bikes I’ve had the pleasure to ride. A sturdy rear rack, 3-speed internal hub gears and full fenders make day-to-day use simple. The gloss sky blue is quite lovely.

Wish list

While the step-through frame was perfect for my skirts and heels, the seat had a plastic piece on the bottom back half that added an uncomfortable chafing factor. A front light, full chain guard and skirt guard would complete this bike and while these are available options on the Bobbin Vintage that model only comes in boring black.

Ideal Rider

Perfect for daily city commuting and if you need to cart a lot of stuff around (and like to wear a dress doing it).

Overall

With white-walled tires and a lugged steel frame this bike looks like a vintage beauty. It is what I feel a 3-speed step-through should be – quick, upright and attractive. It served me well for my 6 mile (11 kilometer) commutes and as an attractive  accessory to my dress and heels.
