The new Globe Haul ST demonstrates that cargo bikes are having a moment with new models being released regularly and some of the best-known bicycle brands on the planet getting in on the act. Case in point, Specialized.
Here is a company that has been crafting two-wheeled gems for some 50 years. Best known for its mountain bikes with models such as the legendary Stumpjumper, this iconic American company headquartered in Northern California pedaled into the cargo bike space earlier this month with the first of a reported line of cargo e-bikes.
It’s no wonder, there has been a pile of cargo e-bikes released already in 2023 including a number from direct-to-consumer brands such as Aventon (see our review here) and Lectric joining established cargo bike brands. The trend is clear.
The Globe Haul St, reasonably priced at $2,700US, according to Specialized, is designed to “bridge the gap between a commuter e-bike and a car.”
So what does that mean exactly? Let’s have a look at what we know about the bike so far.
The line’s inaugural model, the Globe Haul ST, uses a sturdy, premium aluminum frame equipped with a hub-driven custom-tuned motor to transport up to 419 lbs. It has a distinctly industrial, utilitarian vibe about it and it’s definitely got a compact and sturdy look.
The frame is a step-through design with fenders, an integrated rear rack, and plenty of space to attach accessories. It comes in a satin black or glossy white finish.
There is also a 1500-lumen headlight and a 50-lumen taillight.
The bike is mounted on extra small, 20″ double-wall alloy rims and Carless Whisper Reflect 20″ x 3.5″ tires that make the Haul ST deceptively agile and comfortable.
The motor comes with five levels of pedal assistance. The pedal assist is controlled through the Globe Haul ST’s handlebar remote HMI, which also displays the state of charge, estimated remaining range, and odometer.
The drive train features a nine-speed microSHIFT rear derailleur and a SunRace cassette.
The Globe Haul’s 772Wh battery is located in the small space between the top tube and the down tube and, according to Specialized, offers a 60-mile range. There is also a torque sensor so power is supplied as soon as the pedaling begins without any annoying lag.
The Globe Haul ST has a dual-telescoping seat post and adjustable handlebars designed to accommodate riders from 4’5” to 6’4″ tall.
The bike has a versatile mounting system and ecosystem of specifically-engineered accessories that allow riders to personalize the storage and seating configuration best suited to their needs. Think front and rear pannier adaptors, a rear passenger seat, handlebars, and foot pegs, a MIK-ready front rack, a rear wheel cover, and a plug-in throttle.
A rack customization kit also provides various hardware to bolt on just about anything to the front.
The entire Globe line also features a lifetime frame and a 2-year electrical warranty.
