The DIY option

One clever person posting in the Teton Gravity Research forum had the great idea of using plastic piping combined with a rear rack to create a bicycle ski holder.

Inspired by others using sewage pipes attached with hose clamps, he even enhanced the concept to accommodate ski boots. The recipe includes an old beater bike with knobbly tires (free), a rear rack, mudguards (optional but nice), a 28″ long 6″ diameter sewage pipe, a 28″ long 4″ diameter sewage pipe, an end cap, and hose clamps (2 x 6″, 2 x 4″, and 4 x 1″). Topping it off is a plastic milk crate. The method involves attaching the pipes vertically to the rack with hose clamps, gluing the end cap to the 4″ pipe, and securing a milk crate on top with 1″ hose clamps. Skis fit snugly into the 6″ pipe, poles drop upside-down in the 4″ pipe, and ski boots rest in a bag within the milk crate. The total cost, including the bike, is $56.50, providing an efficient and budget-friendly solution for transporting skis on a bike.

There is also potential to insert the piping to hold the skis into pannier bags on a solid rear rack. The point is to get creative!

Selecting the Right Bike for the Job

Not all bikes are created equal when it comes to carrying skis. Opt for a bike with a sturdy frame and the capacity to handle additional weight. Mountain bikes, fat bikes or hybrid bikes are excellent choices for this purpose, providing stability and durability on varying terrains.

Planning Your Adventure: Route and Terrain

Before embarking on your ski-cycling adventure, plan your route and consider the terrain. Choose paths that align with your cycling skill level and are suitable for the additional challenge of carrying skis. Familiarize yourself with the local regulations regarding cycling routes and ensure your chosen path is safe and accessible during the winter months.

Remember, that roadways might not always be fully cleared as there is little expectation for people to ride bicycles to ski hills.

Embrace the Winter Fusion

Carrying your skis by bicycle isn’t just a mode of transportation; it’s an immersive experience that connects you with nature and adds an element of excitement to your winter outings. Embrace the fusion of cycling and skiing, reduce your environmental impact, and embark on a new way to enjoy the winter wonderland. As you pedal to the slopes with skis in tow, you’ll discover the joy of an adventurous journey that begins long before you clip into your bindings.
