Footage from a dash cam shows the driver of a sedan appear to steer their vehicle directly into a Toronto cyclist in front of them, drag the cyclist for a number of metres before finally stopping.

The incident looks like it occurred just before the intersection of Yonge Street and Ranleigh Boulevard in Toronto in the right lane of the two northbound Yonge lanes.

In the video, the driver of the vehicle seems to be honking while attempting to steer past the cyclist although it is clear that there is no space to do so. It also looks like the person riding the bicycle has a food delivery bag on the rear rack.

The video appeared on Twitter at 4:11 p.m. on July 19.

On Yonge Street, protected bike lanes have been installed on some sections to the south of this location, there are also plans to expand those bike lanes northward at some point as well as additional plans for the North York section of Yonge Street under the city’s REimagining Yonge vision. But that is not slated to begin construction until 2027.

Meanwhile, with rampant construction and an increase in population, city streets are getting busier and, as evidenced by this incident, much more dangerous for those who choose to ride a bicycle.

The city is expanding its infrastructure, but it might not be fast enough to keep pace with growth.

If you live in Toronto and would like to advocate for increased bicycle infrastructure, check with the local group Cycle Toronto.
