The Electra Amsterdam Royal 8i is an upright bike with a Shimano Nexus 8-speed internal-gear hub and roller brakes. Included are a leather saddle with steel springs, matching leather grips, front/ rear lights powered by a Shimano Nexus dynamo front hub, rear rack, chainguard, rear wheel lock, and a coat/ skirt guard.

TELL YOUR FRIENDS

The Amsterdam 8i definitely has the cool factor. I often found myself wanting to take this bike out just to be seen. It’s a great way to turn heads on sunny days along the seawall. The dynamo light certainly helped on more than one occasion when meeting friends in the evenings.

WISH LIST

While aesthetically pleasing, I did find the saddle to get a little uncomfortable on extended outings. Even with springs for support, saddle discomfort become noticeable after about 40 minutes especially on bumpy routes.

IDEAL RIDER

If you like to roll in style, and aren’t in a hurry then this is the bicycle for you.

OVERALL

A quality bike built from quality components. The Amsterdam 8i is definitely designed for leisure rather than speed or maneuverability. This goal is very much realized; the bike is a pleasure to ride.

I love all the elements of the Amsterdam 8i, the chain & skirt guards, fenders, vintage styling…and am IN LOVE with the pinstriping detail. But as I live in the rainy PNW and on a big hill, I need as many gears as possible. It is ONLY IN WHITE for women, what a bad color choice. That alone caused me to choose the townie21D. Sad for my bike shop and electra, I would have spend 2X the $$ for the Amsterdam. I still dream of the Amsterdam, and if they make the women’s 8i in green (like men’s) or blue, or any other lovely colors that show off the pinstriping but make it sturdier as a daily bike (not requiring daily cleaning!) I will certainly save my pennies and make it my next purchase!
