Update: The company is now Bold Helmets and the shop is now open online and accepting orders for shipping throughout Canada and the United States.

In Ontario, Canada children under the age of 18 are legally required to wear a helmet, but for Sikh children, the models on the market presented a problem. So Toronto mom Tina Singh, unable to find something that fit properly and tired of cutting styrofoam out to fit her sons’ hair, decided to do something about it. Now, she is set to launch Bold Helmets’ first model.

The first model from Bold Helmets, priced at $ 69.99 CAD is designed for multiple sports. It is certified for use by kids over the age of five in a variety of activities including bicycles, inline skating, kick scooters, and skateboards.

According to a story by the CBC news outlet, Singh worked on the design and testing of the helmet for more than two years.

“I was frustrated that there wasn’t a safe option in sports helmets for my kids,” she said. “This is a big learning curve for me, it’s not something I’ve ever done before,” she said.

In an interview with CTV News Toronto, Singh said “I started saying to my husband. “I spent so much of my time as an occupational therapist working in the area of acquired brain injury that I knew that I didn’t want my kids riding without a helmet.”

The Sikh Helmets model differs from traditional bicycle helmets in that there is a dome at the top of the head to accommodate Sikh kids who keep their hair in buns. The products still needed to, and do, meet safety standards. And the helmets claim to still fit properly with the space of two fingers between the eyebrow and the helmet as well as the space of one finger between the chinstrap and ear.
