Sweden continues to push forward as one of the countries on the cutting-edge of bicycle infrastructure, case in point the new and quite incredible bicycle garage located beside the central transit station of the city of Uppsala.
The environmentally certified building, designed by Tengbom, one of the world’s most innovative architecture firms, is itself an incredible feat of sustainable architecture. And with thousands of commuters passing through the station each day, it was imperative to construct a facility to ensure many of those trips to the station are on bicycles.
The bicycle garage has room for a whopping 1,200 bicycles to be locked up safely and securely in the facility.
The garage is two storeys and wooden ramps connect each floor so it is possible to ride your bike between them.
The bicycle garage has an exposed wood structure, clad in glass facades with black steel moulding.
Solar cells are placed on the sedum-covered roof. While absorbing excess water from heavy downpours, the roof also functions as a fourth facade toward the many tall buildings that surround the bicycle garage.
This is nothing new for Sweden. Years ago, Momentum wrote of a 700-bicycle garage that opened in Stockholm.
Not surprisingly, Uppsala, located near Stockholm, was named the Global Climate City of the Year. After all, bicycles are one of the best weapons we have to stop the climate crisis.
