There are few cycling accessories more convenient and simple than humble handlebar bags. These little gems snap right on the handlebar and are just the right size so we don’t have to cram our phone and other essential items into our pockets. Who wants that? These days, there are many clever handlebar bag offerings that are both stylish and functional. Here are five of our faves.
Chrome Industries, Urban Ex Handlebar Bag, $70
As is usually the case, Chrome Industries has taken the traditional handlebar bag and turned it on its head by creating a fantastic multi-functional carrier. The Urban Ex is compact enough to sit comfortable and out of the way on handlebars, but because of its roll-top design, it can hold much more than one might expect. So, keep it rolled down and carry your essentials, or expand the bag and pack a jacket and shades. It’s constructed of durable materials, and is waterproof. Inside, there are additional pockets to help you stay organized. When you’ve arrived at your destination, the bag comes with a tucked-away shoulder strap so it can be worn across the body when on the move.
North St Pioneer 9 handlebar bag, $80
This hip pack can be purchased with a handlebar kit that allows it to be the best of both worlds. Although it is quite compact, there is still enough room in this bag for all the essentials and there is an additional zippered internal pocket in addition to the zippered pocket on the front for easy access. One of the best things about this bag is the incredible array of colours and styles to make a statement out on the streets.
Tourbon waxed canvas bicycle handlebar bag, $39.99
This bag is ultra compact at just 25 cm by 13 cm, but it’s very stylish, and comes with a shoulder strap so it can be worn out and about as a crossbody bag. It’s constructed of rugged but fresh canvas with leather straps, brass buckles and solid button snap closures. What we love about this particular bag is the clear PVC window on the outside that will allow discerning cyclists to operate smart phones. We kinda love it.
Banjo Brothers barrel bag, $29.99
This no-nonsense handlebar bag is well-constructed and has a capacity of 2.9 litres, enough for all the essentials including a tool kit, spare jacket and more. What we love about this bag is the large reflective stripes and web tabbing for a safety light that add an element of safety that we appreciate. It has a detachable lower strap to control swaying. This bag can also be used as an oversized seat bag.
Warner Wheels vintage canvas handlebar bag, $22.99
This lovely waxed canvas bag has a vintage style we appreciate, which would look very nice riding the handlebars of a city bike. The canvas is water-resistant, though not waterproof, and there are leather straps and metallic zippers that give it a sense of durability. What we like about this bag is the riveted lead hole for headphones and charging cables. It’s a good size at 22.5 cm by 15 cm.

WOTOW is also a good choice. It was built to keep the biker comfortable during the ride. This cycling bag has a thermal insulation feature that keeps food warm and beverages cold for long periods of time. This bike backpack, in my opinion, is ideal for a commuter biker who brings his lunch every day.
