Volkswagen introduces advanced exit warning system to help stop ‘dooring’ incidents

In response to the serious safety concern of “dooring” incidents in urban traffic, Volkswagen is rolling out an enhanced exit warning system across its latest vehicle models. The system aims to address the potential dangers posed to cyclists when vehicle doors are opened in congested city settings.

Prioritizing Urban Safety

Recognizing the vulnerability of cyclists in dense city traffic, Volkswagen’s latest generation exit warning system becomes a standard feature in the new ID.7, new Passat, and new Tiguan models. The primary objective is to alert both drivers and passengers to the presence of road users approaching from behind when the vehicle is stationary.

Tailored Safety Features

Designed to be particularly effective in urban environments, the Volkswagen exit warning system operates by scanning the area behind the vehicle using two rear radar sensors. In the event of a potential hazard, an LED light in the exterior mirror activates as the first warning level, providing a visual alert even before a door handle is touched. If a door handle is operated, the door undergoes a temporary prevention from opening, and an audible warning signal is triggered. Importantly, the system remains active for three minutes after the vehicle is parked and turned off, ensuring comprehensive coverage for all passengers exiting the vehicle.

Widespread Integration

Volkswagen is committed to integrating this safety feature as a standard in its ID.7 model, setting a new benchmark for safety in the electric vehicle category. The new Passat and new Tiguan also benefit from this safety enhancement, providing a consistent level of protection for occupants and cyclists in urban areas.

For the ID.4 and ID.5 models, the exit warning system is available as an optional feature. The system operates similarly to the standard version, with the LED light activating only when passengers initiate the door-opening process. The acoustic signal and electronic opening delay features remain consistent with the standard version.
