Admittedly, the old-timey motocross-style electric bikes are appealing. Why not have a little fun with your mobility? And that’s how I found myself tooling down the bike lane in a sporty new baby blue model with a rather large smile plastered over my face.

The Electric Bike Company’s Model J, the latest addition to its diverse lineup, presents a moto-inspired design, blending style, power, and functionality. This review dissects the Model J’s features, performance, and potential areas for improvement, offering an objective perspective for cycling enthusiasts.

What I found was an electric bike that manages to be both fun and functional.

Model J

Brag to your friends

The Model J boasts a potent 750W rear-hub motor delivering rapid acceleration and a top speed of 28 mph. Its powerful battery provides an impressive minimum range of approximately 50 miles, making it suitable for extended rides. The compact frame with a forward riding position, coupled with EBC Rhino 3″ tires and Tektro Dorado Hydraulic Disc Brakes, offer a stable and thrilling ride. The color LCD display and integrated lights enhance the overall riding experience.

Rear-hub motor

What we loved was the twist throttle, which provided a fun alternative to the standard thumb throttle. It was also nice to see just how customizable the Model J is. Users can basically create their ideal ride mix and matching many components including four different handlebar style, tires, forks, color schemes, and various accessories such as racks. The front rack is actually fantastic for commuters.

There is quite literally 43 different frame, fork and chain guard colors from which to choose. There are two different colors of tires and rims as well.

In terms of performance, the Model J runs well providing significant power when required and makes an easy job of steep hills. It handles decently, and it looks well-constructed.

There are five levels of pedal assist easily controlled by the lovely color display. The slick street tires add to the performance, although the lack of tread limits the use to some degree. This is a tire for cruising the paved streets.

Great color display

The battery, which is housed under the banana seat, is excellent with an excellent range, and the super-charged charger is faster than anything I’ve used to date at getting the battery ready for the day. One of the many upgrades on the Model J is an additional battery for even greater range.

Wish List

The absence of rear suspension may impact comfort on uneven surfaces.

In terms of geometry, the bike is ideally suited for riders of about six feet and under, depending on the choice of handlebars, and how the bike is adjusted. At 6’2″ there was some challenge in finding a good position to efficiently pedal the bike. In future iterations of the Model J, drilling down on that geometry would be beneficial. But for the average rider, the Model J will be very comfortable thanks to that banana seat at the handlebar options.

Ideal User

The Electric Bike Company’s Model J is tailored for both seasoned commuters and avid cyclists exploring their neighborhood and beyond.

For those navigating the urban jungle daily, the Model J doesn’t just offer a mode of transportation; it’s a lifestyle upgrade. Commuters will revel in the convenience of sturdy racks that effortlessly accommodate all types of bags, transforming the e-bike into a versatile cargo carrier. Whether it’s a laptop bag, groceries, or gym gear, the Model J ensures you can effortlessly transport your essentials, making it a reliable companion for the daily grind.

Love this front rack and adjustable handlebars

The thoughtful design extends to practical features like the chain guard, which not only enhances the eBike’s aesthetics but also ensures a clean and low-maintenance ride. The frame geometry and seat position eliminates the need for a rear fender, streamlining the bike’s appearance while maintaining optimal functionality.

Safety is a top priority, and the hydraulic disc brakes on the Model J provide a good level of stopping power. Commuters can confidently tackle any terrain or unexpected obstacles, knowing they have the technology to bring the e-bike to a smooth and controlled stop.

In terms of affordability, the Electric Bike Company has struck the ideal balance with the Model J. Its competitive price tag makes it an accessible choice for riders seeking an outstanding e-bike without breaking the bank.

Final Thoughts

The Electric Bike Company’s Model J stands out as a cool, customizable, and affordable eBike, offering a compelling option for riders seeking a unique blend of style and performance. Its impressive specs, customization options, and positive reputation make it worth considering for cycling enthusiasts.
