Cargo bike racing in Canada is on the come up thanks to a new event in Montreal that took place on the Aug. 21 weekend.

The Montreal Cargo Bike Criterium took place as part of the Jackalope Festival. And, although there was a race aspect to the Cargo Bike League event, according to organizers Allo Velo, it was more about celebrating the cargo bike community in Montreal — whether delivery bikers or parents ferrying their kids to school on the daily.

There was a 500-metre track where participants raced loops as well as cargo-loading zones where riders had to fill up their bikes on the second lap. Cargo items included a beer canister, winter bike tire, and pool noodle with cowbell attached.

Sponsors of the event include Abus, Schwalbe, HLC, Escape and Active brands/Sweet Protection.

Here is a look at some of the cargo bike racing action.
