A Belgium town just got a tiny, perfect pavilion for bike parking

Belgium-based architecture firm WAW Architects designed a stunning pavilion for bike parking located in the middle of the city of Halle. Its simple design, clad in a metal mesh, is the type of bicycle infrastructure that needs to be put in place in urban centers.

According to WAW the pavilion can house 58 bicycles and is located on the site of the OCMW/City of Halle and more specifically on the slope of a “residual parcel” between the access road to the car park behind the Social House and the car park of the residential care center.

The lower level is a public area with safe and guarded parking for 14 bicycles or mobility scooters. The upper level has parking for 44 bicycles and is reachable from the upper car park of the Social House, which is the center for social services in Halle. Each area features automatic doors, access control, lighting, a camera system, and charging facilities for e-bikes.

Both areas will be equipped with automatic doors, access control, lighting, camera surveillance, and charging facilities for electric bicycles.

In terms of sustainability measures, the sloped building features an extensive green roof, which is also used as a buffer for rainwater.

Halle is a city in Belgium with a population of just under 40,000.

The concept for the bike pavilion was featured in the Ride a Bike! Reclaim the City! exhibition at the German Architecture Museum showcasing unique bicycle-friendly urban and landscape design projects.

Secure and well-located bicycle parking facilities, both at transit hubs, and in city centers, are a vital part of creating a cycling city and encouraging bike commuting.
