This year, the PERS Chainless Pedaling System won a German Design Award thanks to its innovative chainless electronic crankset. It’s a big step forward, and one that could help propel the chainless bicycle forward.

“The ‘PERS Chainless Pedalling System’ for all types of e-bikes is an innovative electronic crankset with automatic transmission that works without a chain and still promises a natural pedalling feeling,” read a statement from the awards jury.

As cycling enthusiasts, we’re always on the lookout for innovations that promise to elevate our riding experience. In recent years, one such innovation has been gaining a bit of traction and is at least intriguing: chainless pedaling systems. These cutting-edge systems offer a glimpse into the future of cycling, promising a smoother, more efficient, and maintenance-free ride. Let’s take a closer look at what a chainless bicycle system entails, why they’re generating so much buzz among cyclists, and how they’re shaping the future of biking.

The Traditional Chain Dilemma

For decades, the trusty chain-and-sprocket setup has been the backbone of bicycles, faithfully transferring our pedaling power to the wheels. But let’s face it: chains come with their fair share of headaches. From constant maintenance and lubrication to the dreaded chain slap and derailments, dealing with chains can sometimes feel like a chore.

Embracing Chainless Solutions

Enter chainless pedaling systems, the game-changers we might not have even know we needed. By ditching the traditional chain in favor of innovative alternatives, these systems promise to revolutionize the way we ride. Two prominent examples are the PERS (Pedaling Energy Recovery System) developed by CIXI Active Mobility and the Free Drive® System created through a collaboration between HEINZMANN and Schaeffler.

Introducing the PERS Chainless Pedaling System

The PERS system represents a quantum leap forward in cycling technology. Instead of relying on a clunky chain, it features an electronic crankset that seamlessly integrates into your bike, providing intuitive speed control and automatic transmission. The result? A smoother, more natural pedaling experience that feels like gliding on air.

Key Benefits of the PERS System

  • Say Goodbye to Maintenance Woes: With no chain to lubricate or derail, say hello to hassle-free riding. No more greasy fingers or mid-ride chain fixes – just pure, uninterrupted cycling bliss.
  • Effortless Gear Shifting: Imagine a world where you never have to fiddle with gears again. With the PERS system, gear shifting is a thing of the past. Just pedal at your desired rhythm, and let the system do the rest.
  • Seamless Integration: The PERS system seamlessly integrates into your bike, providing a natural pedaling experience that feels like second nature. No more clunky gear changes or jarring shifts – just smooth, fluid motion every time you ride.

Collaborating with LOOK: Exploring New Frontiers in Chainless Pedaling

In an exciting collaboration between CIXI Active Mobility and LOOK, a legacy brand in the cycling industry, the ROVER 45 concept bike was born. This Urban Speed Pedelec combines LOOK’s expertise in bike design with CIXI’s chainless pedaling technology, resulting in a bike that redefines urban mobility.

The ROVER 45 Concept Bike

The ROVER 45 represents a convergence of sleek design, cutting-edge technology, and unmatched performance. With precise lines, seamless integration, and innovative features such as intuitive speed control and seamless pedaling experience, the ROVER 45 epitomizes the future of electric bicycles.

Will it actually go into production? There have been rumours but nothing set yet.

The Free Drive System

The Free Drive system, developed jointly by Schaeffler and Heinzmann, revolutionizes e-bike propulsion with its chainless design. Consisting of a pedal generator, drive motor, custom battery solution, and human-machine interface, it delivers 250 watts of power.

Its pedal generator reduces the effort needed for pedaling, benefiting cargo bike riders on long routes. Without chains or other mechanical components, it minimizes wear and maintenance, ensuring more uptime for fleet operators. This innovative system also offers flexibility in bike design, enabling various configurations and digital control of gear shifts. All components communicate seamlessly, enhancing performance and reliability.

“With the Free Drive, replacing worn-out drive chains is a thing of the past,” said Dr. Jochen Schröder, head of Schaeffler’s e-mobility division.

Mocci

Mocci’s Smart Pedal Vehicles utilize the Free Drive system to deliver a customizable, safe, and fully connected riding experience. Additionally, mocci integrates recyclable, high-performance plastics into its structural components, reducing CO2 emissions by 68% compared to conventional aluminum frames. With plans to supply vehicles to various B2B customers in 2023, mocci aims to influence inner-city mobility significantly.

Looking Ahead: The Future of Chainless Pedaling

As cyclists, we’re always looking for ways to enhance our riding experience. With chainless pedaling systems like the PERS and the Free Drive® System leading the charge, the future of cycling looks brighter than ever. Say goodbye to chain headaches and hello to a smoother, more enjoyable ride. The road ahead has never looked more intriguing.

It will be interesting to see if chainless pedaling picks up speed, or grinds to a halt.
