Vijay Malhotra has been blogging about his cycling adventures for years at his site Pedal and Tring Tring and recently won a 2023 World Bicycle Day award for his efforts at promoting that bike life. But his bicycle journey began many years ago in his hometown of Mumbai, India.

Mumbai, known as ‘The City of Dreams’, witnessed the birth of this rather remarkable individual whose passion for cycling has sparked a revolution in the city’s urban landscape. Meet Vijay Malhotra, a media professional working in an Indian Television Broadcasting Company, whose love for cycling has not only transformed his life but also inspired countless others to embrace the two-wheeled wonder.

Vijay’s love of cycling began in his childhood when his father gifted his elder brother a shiny ‘Atlas’ MTB. Little did he know that this gift would ignite a lifelong curiosity.

“We couldn’t contain our excitement and ended up sharing the awesome bike, taking turns riding like there was no tomorrow,” Malhotra says.

In Grade 7, Malhotra participated in a cycle race during the annual sports day event, an experience etched in his memory.

“I participated enthusiastically and led the race until the fourth lap, when I, unfortunately, experienced a flat tire, leading to my withdrawal,” he says. “Nevertheless, it was the only time I rode a bicycle at such high speed.”

Despite his early fascination with cycling, Malhotra’s journey encountered obstacles when he ventured too far from home with a friend to explore Juhu Beach secretly. His father’s stern response led to a cessation of his cycling activities, and eventually, the bicycle was sold.

Fast forward to adulthood, Malhotra’s passion for cycling was rekindled during a trip to Paris, where he witnessed the city’s active cycling culture. He returned to India with a renewed purpose.

Cycling through the streets of Mumbai in style

“Cycling gave me freedom. I was no longer tied to a car or public transportation,” he says. “I could go wherever I wanted, whenever I wanted.”

But his cycling journey took an unexpected turn when he battled severe post-COVID complications during the pandemic’s second wave. With determination and the support of loved ones, cycling became a part of his recovery process. Vijay said, “Cycling helped me to improve my stamina, lose weight, and breathe more easily. It also helped me to improve my mood and outlook on life.”

To mark his 40th birthday, Malhotra embarked on a unique celebration, cycling through the bustling streets of South Mumbai in a suit, which is pictured above. Capturing the moment in a professional photo shoot, he showcased that cycling could be both stylish and practical.

Malhotra’s cycling endeavors extended beyond Mumbai when he fulfilled his dream of visiting the Netherlands, immersing himself in the country’s renowned cycling culture and collaborating with local cycling enthusiasts. His blog, Pedal and Tring Tring, which started as a personal recount of his cycling experiences, has now gained a global readership, attracting followers from various countries worldwide.

Beyond personal achievements, Vijay found fulfillment in supporting social causes through cycling. He raised funds for visually impaired cyclists and financially assisted the city’s dabbawalas during the pandemic, proving the power of cycling to connect and serve the community.

Malhotra with his World Bicycle Day Award

His tireless efforts and dedication earned him the prestigious 2023 World Bicycle Day award from the United Nations, recognizing his excellence in promoting cycling for all.

“I am committed to working with others to create a better future for cycling,” he says. “Together, we can make cycling more accessible, inclusive, and sustainable.”

With his eyes set on the future, Malhotra aspires to travel to Europe, Australia, and the United States, exploring their cities on foot and by bicycle while documenting his journeys to inspire more people to embrace cycling. He envisions making India a cycling destination that the world will admire.

Malhotra’s journey with Pedal and Tring Tring is a testament to the transformative power of passion, perseverance, and the simple joy of cycling. As his blog continues to inspire readers across the globe, Vijay remains an indomitable force, championing the cause of cycling for a healthier, happier, and more sustainable world.
